DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Thursday that Joe Torre has been named manager of Team USA for the 2013 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece the Cuban national team won the Gold Medal, defeating Australia in the final by a score of 6-2. Besides stars Yulieski Gourriel, Frederich Cepeda, Pedro Lazo and Ariel Pestano, Cuba also featured a young shortstop from Pinar del Rio.

A much-delayed announcement of the Cuban roster for an upcoming “friendly” series with Team Nicaragua when finally released this past weekend has now provided one of the most intriguing and refreshing Cuban squads of recent memory.

Cuba’s National Series finals provided a few mild surprises, but none bigger than the emergence of Roger Machado at the top of the island’s current list of managerial success stories.
