The women’s baseball project in Costa Rica got off to a good start this weekend in La Sabana with the participation of 25 women, of different ages, who attended the first open training with the objective of having a Women’s League in the short term.
Rachel Fitoria, along with Elpidio Serrano, from the Development Office of the Costa Rican Baseball Federation (FCB Baseball) welcomed the ladies, who arrived with great enthusiasm for the first training session. Some knew about the game, for others it was their first contact with the sport.
In this first approach, the new players began with basic elements of baseball such as fielding, batting and pitching and ended with a group mostly recreational to measure their skills on the field.
“The truth is, I am surprised by the talent, there are girls here who have never played but who can already be seen to be able to develop perfectly in baseball, as well as women who, regardless of age, also strive and want to learn. I am very excited about this first call” said Rachel Fitoria, in charge of the women’s project and who is also an MLB instructor for Latin America.
“Baseball is a sport that allows us to learn to work as a team, I feel very happy to be here, meet new colleagues, I really enjoyed this first experience” said María Fernanda Escalante.
About 60 women had registered for this first appointment, but not all of them managed to arrive due to work, study and health restrictions. However, they will have their space to come and learn. The group is not closed and any woman 13 years and older can join.
