WBC: Japan survives Opener against Brazil
Fukuoka. Two-time champion Japan survived a scare against Qualifier winner Brazil to win the World Baseball Classic opener in Fukuoka by a score of 5-3. Three runs in the top of the eighth turned a 2-3 deficit into the victory.

For the third time after 2006 and 2009 the World Baseball Classic will be played from March 2 to March 19. Japan won the first two editions with wins over Cuba respective Korea in the title games.

MLB Umpiring Staff Changes for 2013 announced
Major League Baseball announced the changes to the Major League Umpiring staff for the 2013 regular season. The changes include three new crew chiefs and three new full-time Major League Umpires.
Final Rosters for 2013 World Baseball Classic
World Baseball Classic, Inc. announced the final rosters submitted before the February 20th deadline by the 16 Baseball Federations participating in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Final rosters include up to 28 players. Provisional rosters were announced on January 17th.
Coach Clinic in Mexico City
A one-week clinic for Baseball coaches is underway in Mexico City. From February 17 to 23, 2013 the Mexican Baseball Federation in cooperation with International Sports Group are hosting a level-one baseball course in the Mexican capital. Peter Caliendo (member of the IBAF Tournaments Commission), Jim Hall (ABCA Hall of Fame), and Mike Pinto (Manager Southern Illinois Minors, Frontier League) are the coaches during the clinic.

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Thursday, marking the organization’s first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2013 for the 36th time.
“Baseball For All” squad wins inaugural Mayan Princess Cup
Merida, Yucatan – On the same day that baseball pioneer Justine Siegal learned that her sport had succeeded in its petition to be played at the Pan American Games, her “Baseball For All” (BFA) team of 12-year-olds beat the host Yucatan Flower Power squad 11-1 in a game that was closer than the score indicated, to win the inaugural Mayan Princess Cup. BFA wound up undefeated with a perfect 6-0 record through the double knockout style tournament that included an earlier 8-5 victory over Flower Power, as well as a pair of wins against each of the Jalisco Blue Jays and Colegio Merida.
